Stop Chasing This And Start Chasing That!

Stop. Stop it right there. I know what you’re doing right now, oh faithful reader of PrettyPlease – you’re judging me. First, I haven’t texted or called or blogged since before Baby North West was born/conceived (date of conception may be questionable, but that’s neither here nor there). Second, I showed up with an uber vague title which means WHAT Raji, WHAT! (I’m getting there I promise, I promise). Anywho, the POINT is that I’m BACK.

Now that we’re done being mad for the separation anxiety we caused, it’s time to get on with the purpose of my EXTREMELY vague title. So often, we are told to chase things in life. Here’s a minor layout as to what we’re supposed to chase in our lives:

Age 0 – 4: No one cares. Just learn your ABC’s. Learn how to share and get potty trained. This is the most legit time in your life – everyone has zero expectations from you other than don’t eat mud and don’t be that kid who starts screaming in the middle of an outing with your parents.

Age 5 – 18: You’re parents want the best for you. Hence, they start teaching you to chase. During this time period, you are told to chase grades. Anything lower than an A, and you need to keep chasing buddy. Once you get that “A” average, the next thing you’re going to be chasing will be the idea of your dream career. My amazing Indian parents thought I would be a doctor (fail, to this day I can’t look at a needle without crying), a lawyer (yea until I realized I hated the law), and an engineer (why couldn’t they understand I just wanted to be a princess??). So now you’re chasing your grades, the idea of career, and the pursuit of a top-tier college which brings me to..

Ages 18 – 22: College. This is where you roll up your sleeves, get into the nitty gritty, cue some Rocky fight music on Spotify and start chasing. CHASE THAT DIPLOMA, BABY! Cuz no diploma, no job.

life advice marriage advice when should i get married career advice money advice companionship advice annoying marriage talk arranged marriage discussion everyone is getting married pretty please us pretty please blog

Ages 22 – the rest of your life: M & M. Marriage and Money. Both marriage and money are great right? Yup, but what if I told you I can tell you two things to chase instead that will give you an even better future? It’s true. I’m effing badass, and I got your back, so LISTEN UP:

STOP CHASING MARRIAGE

life advice marriage advice when should i get married career advice money advice companionship advice annoying marriage talk arranged marriage discussion everyone is getting married pretty please us pretty please blog

I get it. I get it. (Drake voice) Some people genuinely dream about their wedding day since the tender ages of 3 (I am rolling my judgmental eyes at these people, but hey let’s agree to disagree). For some people, their life goal is to find a suitable partner who will take care of all their needs and wants and then build a family with them – fair enough. I don’t disagree that marriage is and should be the end goal – but the entire pursuit of marriage becomes a frenzy for some people. Marriage is not a race to the alter – it’s simply the next natural step which should be taken when it is right to do so, not because you hit a certain age or your parents want a son-in-law (buy them a puppy, it might buy you some time).

START CHASING COMPANIONSHIP:

Instead of considering every single new person you date the potential to be your life partner and creating unnecessary expectations, start meeting people and understanding what they’re genuinely about. Focus on the individual – their traits, their habits, their values, and not whether or not they’d look great in a designer tux. Then enjoy each other – fully focus on what you want and what your partner wants – and when both sets of expectations align – gloriously move onto the next step.

STOP CHASING MONEY

I was absolutely guilty of this when I first got out of college. I took one of the first jobs that I was offered and ran with it – thinking, I will use this experience to work towards my dream job. Then of course, a common pitfall which happens to a LOT of us occurred – I became a slave to my paycheck. I got so caught up in chasing the dinero that I forgot to remember what I should be chasing: my dreams and my own goals. We get caught up chasing jobs which we think are going to make us so much money, which for the most part is great – but not when you don’t love what you do.

START CHASING YOUR CAREER:

This should be your focus. Chase your ambitions. What are you good at? What do you love doing? Then determine how to create the best career and roadmap for that ultimate goal. Because it’s true – when you love what you do, the money will gradually follow!

life advice marriage advice when should i get married career advice money advice companionship advice annoying marriage talk arranged marriage discussion everyone is getting married pretty please us pretty please blog

So your homework is to learn and love this equation: CC > MM. Chase companionship and your career, and stop chasing marriage and money. And yup, thank me later (via roses, only if they’re red). Till next time kittens! Xoxo!

Hi, my name’s Raji. You may know me from my blog, or my ridicInstagram/Twitter. I’m here to walk you through the heady concept of “dating”.

(Cue: Themetrack from Psycho. )

So let’s dive right into it, shall we?

I’ve never heard anyone say “Man, this dating thing is really amazing! I’m having the time of my life dating, there are SO MANY FISH IN THE SEA, you’d think I’m at Waterworld 24-7.” And well, the reason for this is quite simple, as I said in my instagram video, dating sucks. It’s not the easiest thing to embark on, it’s anxiety inducing, and as a wise woman once said “Ain’t nobody got time for that“. Each week for the next 5, I’ll be exploring why dating sucks!

Tomorrow I’m Quitting My Job

You know it’s bad when those 5 words have become your mantra. I, like many 20-somethings, 30-somethings, 40-somethings, etc, was stuck in a major career rut. I had a flexible schedule, I was good at my job, I was getting paid enough to live a comfortable life, and I loved my co-workers. I was thankful to have my job..

BUT.. the catch? Wrong industry, wrong job, wrong fit. I wanted to work in the tech industry and wanted an entirely different role. In short, I grew to hate my job because it was not what I wanted to be doing at all. Logic dictated, that it was time to find a new job. Prior to prepping for this, I scoured endless blogs on the topic and realized there was a very skewed perception on how to properly quit a job and the steps to attain a new one.

So here is my gift and advice to those of you who are similarly in my situation: I’m going to help you quit your job tomorrow.

find a new job job hunting how to find a new job tips to find a new job resume tips how to change resume how to quit your job interview tips and tricks ways to find a new job i hate my job how to find a new career what to do when you hate your job unhappy job seekers how to remain positive while finding a new job finding a new job immediately resignation letters how to write a resignation letter how to formally quit your job how to find a new job fast find a new job easily new job pretty please blog pretty please us blog career advice job hunting advice what to do when you want a new job

1) Figure out your passion, fast.

“I hate my job, I hate working here! ARGHHH I WANT A NEW JOB!”

“What do you want to do?”

“I don’t know.. I just want a new job.”

Um, no. That’s not how it works. In order to take on your ideal career, you have to focus on what makes you happy and what your strongest skill set is. Then focus on a field that fits your interests and start researching potential jobs for you. Read through job descriptions to see if you genuinely could do the tasks listed. Once you find a good job description – use that as your standard to what jobs you will be hunting for.

2. Make time for your job hunt.

But you probably have no time to work on it, huh? You probably also don’t have time to apply to jobs every day. After work you must be so burnt out from your day job, you just want to go to the gym and cue your netflix. Okay look, I get it. It took me months to make myself actually muster the courage to start working on my resume. Then I abandoned that because I needed 2 weeks to watch the every season of Lost. Then I worked on my resume again after a few months.

My point, is if you have a day job, you are going to be exhausted and disgruntled when you come home. The last thing you want to do is to apply for a new job. However, thats exactly what you need to do if you ever intend on finding a new gig. Make yourself devote 2 hours a night to applying for jobs. I started off applying to 1-2 jobs per night for a month, then slowly it became easier and I was able to apply to many at a time. Point being, man up and make time.

3. Work on your resume. And then work on it again. And again. And again. And again.

Your resume is your bait. A shark doesn’t want  boring, monotonous, bland, generic bait. A shark wants the BEST, most appealing, and attractive bait out there.

The first time you work on your resume, you’re going to feel so proud of yourself. Then you’re going to send it out a few times, and get good feedback and bad feedback. Incorporate all of this feedback and keep working on it, until it becomes a cycle. Review listing, adjust resume, apply to job, and repeat. Also save and label all of your resumes and cover letters. I used Google Drive to organize all of my various versions, which was nice because I could access it from my phone or any computer at any time to job hunt.

4. Do not quit your day job.

Growing up, I was raised to value financial independence. I’d been financially independent since college, and didn’t want that to change. I didn’t have parents that would support me and my habits while I sat at home “figuring it out” on their dime. One thing I read a lot of while my initial job hunt started was “I was risky, I quit my job, and have never been happier” – that idea scared me. Though I knew finding a new job in a new industry yielded its risk, I didn’t want to deplete my savings by quitting without any other options.

At the same time, I understand the desperation of disliking your job so much that you want out – however, don’t let your emotions get the best of you. Channel all of that energy to job hunting even more rigorously. Also, make a list of your current and impending finances so you can make a budget, this will aid you once you determine the salary range you are seeking in your next job.

5. Interview^3

Once you start flooding the market with your resume, you’re going to get calls. Phone interviews, in-person interviews, 6th round interviews, Skype interviews. My advice: Do them all. The more practice, the better. Chances are if you’ve been in a steady job, it has been a while since you’ve interviewed. Practice explaining your skill set, and how you can apply them to the job you are seeking. If an interview prolongs itself to several rounds, so be it – do every round with the same focus and preparation as the last. Job seekers have the upper hand in today’s market, but don’t forget your talent and worth – so learn how to market it well!

6. Don’t be afraid to make adjustments.

Whether this means opening up your job search to similar, if not identical roles, as part of getting your foot in the door to a desired company, or if this means taking a pay cut to get that ideal role – don’t be afraid to give a little. You have your focus set on  your ultimate goal, and so long as these adjustments are in align with that, you will fine.

7. Give Proper & Respectful Notice

Trust me, I wanted to go out like a G. I wanted to walk in to my managements office, have a poster board of me in a paradise-like background, throw up a peace sign, and say “I’m out this b-oardroom”.

But I didn’t. Instead, I reflected on all of the good things I learned at my job, and wrote a thoughtful resignation letter, and provided the appropriate notice to my employer. Main point here: Don’t burn bridges. Even if you will never go back to this job, do the right thing and remain respectful.

8. Dont Expect Your World to Change

Congrats, you did it. You busted your behind and put in relentless effort to making sure you found the right fit. BUT, it’s just the beginning. Be prepared to start from the ground up, establish yourself as a hard worker, and under promise & over deliver. Have faith, work hard, and utilize your passion to the fullest! Put in enough effort and I am sure you’ll be uttering those 5 words in no time at all.

5 Tips For Having A Super-Uber-Duper Successful Experience at Alt Summit

Ahem, I have an itty bitty announcement to make: I LOST MY ALT SUMMIT CHERRY!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to the ultimate blog/design/networking conference: Altitude Summit. I sat in traffic for an hour on what is a normal 20 minute ride to the airport, couldn’t find parking for 20 minutes, lugged my hot pink suitcase, and equally big and honkin’ carry on bag in the parking lot to the airport, got stared down by people waiting in line in security because I asked to cut.. only to make it with 3 minutes prior to boarding time was announced. Oh I knew it was going to be a good trip from the start.

To be honest, I was terrified. I didn’t know what to expect. Would there be amazing gorgeous perfect bloggers everywhere? Would I be able to say anything to them without stuttering? The answer to both of those questions was YES and YES. Truth be told, I’m not the best networker, but I honestly have to say Alt Summit was an amazing experience for me – not only did I get tons of knowledge about social media/tech, but also some really good tips for my blog! Because I want to make your first (or next) Alt Summit conference visit amazing, I came up with some tips that I think will make your Alt visit PERFECT.COM!

1) STAY AT THE HOTEL!!!

This may be a bit tricky as the hotel sells out immediately after the conference is announced. We tried looking for rooms here and as it was sold out, we figured we would be able to stay at a nearby hotel and be fine. We ended up finding a modest hotel about .2 miles away – and we thought we were golden! What we weren’t banking on was the snow, an additional conference in the area, and a taxi wait time to rival SF weekend wait times.

The Grand America Hotel - SLC, Utah – Isn’t it pretty?!

To save any hassle, ensure to stay at the hotel. Waiting an hour and a half for a taxi to show up and not being able to run up to our room to rest was a bit of a pain. Additionally, we were late for the mini party the first day due to taxi wait. Moral and lesson learned, we will be staying at the GRAND AMERICAN HOTEL next year for Alt!

2) HAVE A SNAZZY BUSINESS CARD Continue reading
